TRAGIC ROMANCE IN THE
FAULT IN OUR STARS BY JOHN GREEN
( comparison term paper between classic and modern tragic romance genre)
The interpretations of tragic
romance works in the 20th century have evolved to suit the mentalities of
today's audience. The definition of love and tragedy for the new generation is
represented in a modern cliché which uses modern strategies with preserving
some old elements. Literary works were affected by the development of the world
as writers were inspired by the innovative power of the modern revolutions.
Modern works represent the power of imagination, the sense of spiritual meaning
and reality, and the emphasis of individual perspectives (Harrison, p. 72). Moreover these works illustrate some hidden
messages through symbolic imageries which teach morals and life lessons.
Postmodern novels show humanitarian values through experiencing reality in its
events.
This paper will compare the class of
tragic romance literature with the post-modern tragic romance literature. As it
will identify how this genre of tragic romance has evolved in the twenty first
century through comparing one of the most well-known tragic romance works Romeo
and Juliet by William Shakespeare with the New York Times best seller The
Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
