(Cozy Mystery Fiction Vs Hard-Boiled Fiction)

Crime fiction is essentially a genre that deals with crime, its investigations, criminals and motives. It focuses on the violation of the legal, morals and social values of a country (Scaggs,2005, p.2) . Seago (2014) points out that crimes and criminals can indicate what each civilisation views as legal and acceptable. It is also about understanding how and why the crime happened and how a detective can solve the case (Jalová, 2007). In crime fiction, the writer is interested in “characterisation, psychological motivation”, and trivial details of everyday life (Jalová, 2007). Mostly, crime fiction stories and novels have a common structure. It begins with a crime, usually a murder; then there is an investigation; and finally there is a judgement and punishment which often end with the arrest or death of the criminal (Ibid, 2007).  The hero of crime fiction is usually a detective who acts upon the rules of logic rather than emotions. He often has a friend who helps him to “reveal the culprit” (Jalová, 2007). Yet, in some novels and stories the hero is not the detective but the criminal himself.

My reading of Sabiha Khemir's novel Waiting in the Future for the Past to Come

Women's World & Existentialism in Waiting in the Future for the Past to Come

Sabiha Khemir a Tunisian writer who received her BA in English literature from University of Tunis, MA and PhD degrees in Islamic art and archaeology from London University. She wrote The Blue Manuscript and Waiting in the Future for the Past to Come which are considered as fiction novels. The first novel she wrote is Waiting in the Future for the Past to Come, which is a story about a young Tunisian girl named Amina in her village Korba. The narrator in this novel expresses her personal thoughts and feelings towards different situations she goes through during the post-colonial period in her village. The novel presents a mixture of experiences and lessons that the young protagonist goes through and the way she responses and deals with them in a conservative and a traditional society. 

This paper will illustrate women's world through presenting the traditional and the psychological image of Tunisian women. Moreover, it will elucidate women's modern image which is expressed through existentialist notions.

Comparison between "The Soldier" and "Dulce Et Decorum Est" 

(as Discussed in Dr. Khalid Al-Blushi's Lecture in SQU)

It's just another day in the battlefields of WW1. Both poems share the idea of representing the feelings of soldiers in the battlefields, as both poets had participated in this war and experienced the feeling there. Although both poems present the same topic, each poet looks at war from a different angel through his own experience. Brooke in his poem "the Soldier " shows that the poem is written pre-war because it indicates the bright side of war as he keeps idealizing the war and glorifying it. However, Owen in his poem "Dulce Et Decorum Est" is more of a realistic poem that represents the dark side of war and the hardiness that soldiers go through for the sake of their country. The following will illustrate the different views of war of the two poets shortly as discussed in Dr. Khalid's lecture in SQU.

In the first poem  "the Soldier " by Rupert Brooke  we see the bright side of war. The poem focuses on the point of appropriating every foreign land to be "forever England" if any English soldier dies on that land. He idealize the land that a British man will die on as he uses the word "dust" to show the quality of the ashes of a dead British solider. He keeps glorifying these lands by saying that England is buried in this earth.


In the other poem  "Dulce Et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen it is completely the opposite. The poem represents the dark side of the war, it shows the misery, harshness and suffer that soldiers go through. The poet at the begging used an ironic title to mock those who glorify and idealize war. On purpose, the title is written in Latin as it is dignifying war yet the poem itself shows the dehumanization of war. Therefore, the poet gives detailed images from the battlefield that shows the real situation in wars. At the beginning he describes the soldiers, he says that they look like old beggars and old women which indicates that these soldiers don't have any dignity in wars and gives a sense of being frail. Then, these soldiers "marched asleep", it shows the mental and physical condition of these soldiers. It also gives an idea of discipline, where it shows the way that soldiers supposed to walk.

TRAGIC ROMANCE IN THE FAULT IN OUR STARS BY JOHN GREEN

( comparison term paper between classic and modern tragic romance genre)  

The interpretations of tragic romance works in the 20th century have evolved to suit the mentalities of today's audience. The definition of love and tragedy for the new generation is represented in a modern cliché which uses modern strategies with preserving some old elements. Literary works were affected by the development of the world as writers were inspired by the innovative power of the modern revolutions. Modern works represent the power of imagination, the sense of spiritual meaning and reality, and the emphasis of individual perspectives (Harrison, p. 72).  Moreover these works illustrate some hidden messages through symbolic imageries which teach morals and life lessons. Postmodern novels show humanitarian values through experiencing reality in its events.

This paper will compare the class of tragic romance literature with the post-modern tragic romance literature. As it will identify how this genre of tragic romance has evolved in the twenty first century through comparing one of the most well-known tragic romance works Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare with the New York Times best seller The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

The significance of race and culture in Shakespeare's play Othello        

 A paper written through reading Campbell & Neill's articles 

Many critics approached the racial dimensions and the cultural diversity in Shakespeare's play, which serves the plot and supports Iago's methods to destroy Othello. The ideas presented in Campbell and Neill papers assures that race and culture differences are the main reasons that contribute to the tragedy of Othello. This paper will first discuss the idea of racial consciousness through conquering Othello psychologically and mentality by Iago. Iago plants the idea of race in Othello's mind by using linguistic imperialism and manipulated speeches, as he distinguishes the actions of nature and against nature and the ideas of like and unlike. Secondly, the paper will introduce the references to the Arab, African and the Venetian cultures. The significance of these cultures will be discussed in terms of the character's behaviors and attitudes, the use of language and the handkerchief. This paper will introduce the significance of race and culture in Shakespeare's play through my reading of Campbell (2011) and Neill's (2005) articles.
